Bring relief to my mother Tandeka

Hi my name is Tionne Townsend and I’m a 21 year old senior attending Williams College. I live with my mother in New York City and will soon be starting my senior year remotely. 

I made this fundraiser with the help of a friend in order to ask for financial help for my now disabled mother. My 44 year old mother, Tandeka, worked as a cashier for the last 11 years. Her daily life changed forever when she was admitted to the hospital on April 9th with symptoms of a stroke. 

After having multiple CT scans and imaging taken and undergoing two surgeries, my mother was diagnosed with a rare disease known as Moyamoya which restricts blood flow to the brain resulting in the stroke. On May 14th, my mom finally came back home after spending over a month in both the hospital (2 weeks) and a rehabilitation center (3 weeks). 

Now months later, my mother is still receiving therapy as she is still suffering a number of cognitive, speech, and physical impairments (i.e. inability to converse, little to no use of her dominant hand, difficulty walking). This new reality means that my mother is on a road to at-home recovery that her doctors say can take up to 2 and ½ years. As the major-breadwinner of the household, my mom’s condition has resulted in a significant loss of income. Though she is (thankfully) receiving disability payments, they have not been sufficient in covering expenses related to medical bills, rehabilitative bills, and quite frankly monthly rent. 

As someone who has always been able to rely on my mother for everything, I have never really been in a position where I had to reach out to others and ask for help. Still, I am glad I am able to be here for my mother now when she needs me most and help her in the ways that she needs.
