Bring PT to Spring Village, Jamaica
Donation protected
Spring Village is a rural community with a population of approximately 8,000 people in the St. Catherine Parish of Jamaica, roughly one hour from the capital of Kingston. Spring Village is served by one pro bono health clinic with just one nurse as the primary care provider. The clinic treats clients of all age ranges (newborns to geriatrics), condition, and function.
With limited healthcare services, many members of the Spring Village community suffer from musculoskeletal injuries and conditions that further limit their physical activity and ultimately exacerbate their comorbidities. The head nurse at Spring Village Health Clinic stated she sees between 10-50 clients on an average day and does not have the training or resources to treat patients with conditions outside of her scope.
Focuses of our outreach project are to: (1) increase the awareness for rehabilitation services and common injuries with physical activity, (2) provide resources required to treat musculoskeletal conditions and functional impairments, (3) provide educational resources for the lead nurse to provide members of the Spring Village community at the appropriate health literacy level, and (4) increase the clinician’s knowledge base and confidence to treat various musculoskeletal pathologies. Our primary goal aligns with that of the clinic director Randy Finnikin: “lead the community to live healthy, productive, and prosperous lives.”
All funds raised will go directly to rehabilitation equipment and supplies for the Spring Village Health Clinic.
