January 25 Update
The Walenta family is overwhelmed by the outpouring of support during Pic’s hospitalization and since her passing on Wednesday evening. Obviously, the focus of the fundraising has shifted from care in the DR, medevac and care in the US - which was anticipated to cost a significant amount - to something much more manageable. Because of this, we will close the fundraising at this point. As we sort through our grief and our next steps, we will understand more thoroughly the scope of additional costs not yet covered by the family. With deep respect and gratitude, given the changed circumstances, we would like you to know that we would be happy to return your donation if so desired. Please contact Mike at [email redacted]. Our wish is to be transparent and respectful of everyone’s generosity and we will provide updates periodically. For those of you wondering about a memorial service, we are currently in discussion about how to best celebrate Pic’s life.
With Pic's transition, the focus of this campaign has changed from the original air MedEvac. Please stay tuned for updates and thank you all for your amazing support on so many levels. Rest in love and light our beloved Pic.
On January 16th, our beloved friend, sister, grammie, aunt and inspiration suffered a hemorrhagic stroke while vacationing in the Dominican Republic. Pic has been in a medically induced coma since Friday to help protect her brain. On January 20th, the surgical team did a procedure which successfully contained most of the aneurysm. We are making arrangements to medically evacuate her as soon as she is stable enough, hopefully within a week! A hospital in Kansas City has been found that will accept her but the cost of transportation and care are significant. What's crucial now is raising immediate funds for the medical air evacuation, Anything additional raised will be used to recoup ongoing medical costs. You can donate anonymously if you wish. Please help the Walenta family bring her home!
"She always has a load on her back...carrying life tragedies, her life stories, the good and the bad, lifting her family and friends up. It might be full of things we don't know about, then again I bet there could be a bottle of Missouri wine, a glass and an opener and matches for a bonfire! For sure there are forever memories of Duff. And lots of giggles and playdough for Olivia...the light in her life. All I know is that somewhere in that bigger than Pic backpack is that we are all in there right beside her.....a friend from 5th grade or a new one she just met at the villa. Keep shining Pic!!!!!"
