*** 9/29/26 UPDATE ***
We have some truly remarkable news to share!
On September 29th, Fil officially transitioned out of the hospital and into a long-term rehabilitation facility—a massive milestone in his journey toward a full recovery.
Even more exciting, Fil is showing incredible signs of progress every day. He is officially speaking, demonstrating sharp mental acuity, and showing strong memory recall. On the physical side, he is already working hard in therapy: standing up with assistance and actively participating in everyday tasks like putting on his own clothes.
Seeing his determination and hearing his voice again has brought so much hope to his family, friends, and care team.
While there is still work ahead in rehabilitation, these leaps forward are a testament to Fil’s strength and the power of the support, prayers, and donations you all have provided. Please continue to keep Fil and his family in your thoughts as he takes on this next chapter of healing!
*** 9/5/26 0630 UPDATE ***
Thank you to everyone who has continued to share, support, and stand behind Filip and his family. The overwhelming outpouring of love and support has meant more than we can put into words.
We are grateful to share that Filip is showing positive signs of recovery, including continued movement. He has also been successfully transferred from León to a better-equipped hospital in Managua. This critical step in his care was made possible in large part because of your incredible love, generosity, and support.
As we continue this long road to recovery, we are now working to arrange a medical air ambulance to transport Filip from Managua to Chicago. Once he arrives in Chicago, continued specialized medical care will be essential as we work toward getting Fil strong enough to return home to his family.
Filip’s family extends their deepest and most sincere gratitude to every person who has shared his story, offered prayers, provided support, or simply kept him in their thoughts. Your kindness is carrying this family through an incredibly difficult time.
Thank you for continuing to stand with Filip. ❤️
*** End of UPDATE ***
Dear friends, family, and community,
I’m working directly with Nikki Dezonno (Filip's wife) raising funds for my friend and co-worker, Filip Czarnecki, a dedicated Lake Forest police officer who has spent his career serving and protecting the community. While on a personal vacation visiting family in Nicaragua, Filip suffered a tragic fall onto his head that caused a severe traumatic brain injury. He is now in critical condition in the ICU in León, Nicaragua, on a ventilator and in a coma.
Right now, Filip needs urgent help getting access to better medical care. A specialized international air ambulance transport to the United States is his best chance at recovery. Once back in Chicago, Filip can receive care from neurological doctors, better scans, and a more progressive and aggressive treatment needed to help heal his TBI and mitigate long-term neurological damage. His wife, sister, and mother are graciously asking for help to care for Fil and get him the best medical help possible during this crisis.
Emergency medical evacuations out of Central America are rarely covered by standard insurance and often require large upfront payment. At the same time, Filip's family is facing mounting out-of-pocket medical bills and international travel costs while staying close and fighting for the care he needs now.
- Funds will help cover:Specialized fixed-wing air ambulance transport to the U.S.
- Immediate international hospital and ICU expenses
- Ongoing medical care and hospitalization
- Medical transportation to the U.S. and other international transportation needs
- Travel and lodging for family in Nicaragua
Filip has spent his life stepping up for others in their hardest moments. Now he and his family need the community to step up for him. If you are able to donate, any amount will help. If you cannot give, please consider sharing this fundraiser. Updates on Filip's condition will be posted here as available. Thank you for your kindness and support during this time.
9/4 is Filip’s birthday, we believe the power of unified global prayer creates miracles, and our Filip needs a miracle right now, we ask you to pray for Filip in unison at 1:00pm and 6:00pm everyday until he is healed. Thank you for your optimistic thoughts during this difficult time.
