Urgent Help Needed: Recovery, Safe Housing, & Care for Mom

Help Us Bring My Mom and Her Husband Closer to Home for Recovery, Care, and a New Start

We are raising funds to:
  • Cover medical expenses: Including the six weeks of IV antibiotics, rehabilitation, and follow-up care, with co-pays exceeding $500 per week.
  • Relocate them closer to family: Help them move to Indiana or Wisconsin so they can be near family for support and long-term care.
  • Secure a reliable vehicle: Allowing them to attend medical appointments, church, and continue assisting others in their community.
  • Improve their living conditions: Provide a safe home with access to clean water and stable living conditions.

My mom has been in the hospital for over a month and has undergone more than four surgeries this month alone due to a severe infection that spread to her bone, which led to the amputation of her toe. The infection, combined with side effects from some medications, caused personality changes, confusion, and memory loss. We are still anxiously waiting for updates and should know in the next 24-48 hours if the infection has spread further into her foot or leg, which may require additional amputation.

She requires six weeks of IV antibiotics, rehabilitation, and follow-up care, with co-pays exceeding $500 per week—costs that we cannot manage on our own. Initially, we placed her in a care facility to help with these expenses, but her condition worsened while she was there.

During her stay at the facility, my mom was placed in a COVID isolation unit, although she did not have COVID at the time. We were not informed of this beforehand, which led to her being exposed to the virus. The facility later indicated that they had informed us of this decision, but we had no prior knowledge. She was not allowed outside or able to visit with family during this time. Additionally, despite our repeated requests for a diabetic-appropriate diet, she was given foods that we believe contributed to her elevated blood sugar levels and worsened her infection. She is now back in the hospital, recovering after the emergency amputation of her toe, and we are awaiting further updates on whether more of her foot or leg will need to be amputated.

Both my mom and her husband are disabled. My mom has a developmental disability caused by oxygen deprivation at birth, and her husband suffers from lasting side effects from years of chronic seizures. They live in government housing in Michigan on a very limited income. Despite these challenges, they have always been generous, giving back to their local church and community. They also assist community members with transportation, but their vehicle is aging and becoming increasingly unreliable.

Additionally, their current home does not have access to consistent clean water. This, combined with the poor condition of their residence, has prompted us to seek a better living situation where they can be closer to family for more consistent care.

Any contribution will make a meaningful difference in helping my mom and her husband recover in a supportive environment, stay connected with family, and receive the care they need. Your generosity will help them return home, cover additional medical expenses, secure transportation, and move toward a healthier, more stable life.

Thank you so much for your support.
