This is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. I have never asked for help in my 48 years. But my boy means more to me than my pride so I am going to do my best. On 5/19/22 my eldest son Alex was on his nightly bike ride with his 18-month-old daughter, Sophie on the back. Alex took her every day-twice a day-on a ride to the park or the trail or the beach.
Before 9 pm, as he gave his sweetheart her nighttime bike ride, he was tragically shot down in cold blood and died. My grandchild, amazingly was not hit but she got scratched up, and I imagine traumatized forever. I feel her daddy shielded her in his final moments and stayed with her until she was safe.
He was an up-and-coming music producer, and a full-time single father. Things began to happen for him. He was going to move back home with me. He had been coming home almost every day with my granddaughter and we were turning his old room into a princess room. He was all set to move back in that weekend.
I wasn't informed by the police until 3 am, and it was a moment that I will re-live for the rest of my life.
Now, I am a divorcing single mother of a teen, who has no family to offer me any support. Alex had no father to speak of. I need help for my son. I need to come up with the final arrangements for cremation and the memorial he so deserves.
I also need to prepare to honor him by giving the love and light of his life, his baby girl, the life he wanted her to have, surrounded by his memory of how much he loved her and how much he loved being her daddy. There is nothing harder than accepting the death of your child and there is no worse torture than imagining him cold and alone waiting for me to rescue him and bring him to the one place he longed to be, home. So, I ask for any help in letting my son be at peace and memorialized for the light he brought to the world. To bring my baby home again and prepare to give my grandchild the life I know he wanted for her. Every penny I am eternally grateful for and it all will go towards bringing him home so that his spirit can be at peace.
