Bring Mike West Closer to Home for Recovery

Donation protected
Mike West, the Hoosier SuperTour Race Director, Runoffs Assistant Race Director, and a friend to all, has had a medical event at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs on October 3rd. This caused him to fall, hitting his head, which resulted in a traumatic brain injury. He was airlifted from the track to a hospital in Neenah, WI, for treatment and is now at a catastrophic care hospital in Madison, WI. Although Mike is improving, he still has a long journey ahead in his recovery. We want to say thank you so much to everyone in our SCCA family and the many others who have supported Mike and Bobbie in this challenging time.

As his condition gradually improves, the next step is to get Mike to a facility closer to his home in Memphis, TN. We know not only will this aid his recovery, but it will also help his wife, Bobbie, who has barely left his side since the fall. We hope that Mike will be ready to transfer by mid-November.

Due to Mike's current medical condition and the distance (10-12 hours), he can't be transported by a private vehicle. The medical staff has advised that transportation by ground ambulance is not a good solution either. The advice of the medical staff leads us to the best and only safe option to get Mike to a facility close to home, which is by air ambulance. As you may have guessed, transportation by air ambulance is very expensive and usually is not covered by insurance. Based on our initial conversations, even though this occurred at an SCCA event, since this was a medical emergency and not an accident, the event insurance generally does not provide coverage in these situations.

We have contacted several services, and based on their estimates, we are asking for help raising $25,000 toward the cost of transportation by air ambulance to ensure the safest journey for Mike to get home. We would also like everyone to know if there are any additional funds they will be used to help his wife, Bobbie, along with her local support system, including their son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren with hotels, transportation, and any expenses related to his treatment in Wisconsin, as well as continuing medical care for Mike that is not covered fully by insurance.

As you can imagine, a huge burden would be lifted off Bobbie and his family once Mike is safely home, and there he can continue to work toward a full recovery. Please help us bring our beloved friend, husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather home to recover with his family. Thank you for any financial support you can provide to help with his journey.
