Ok. Deep breath.
This is a big vulnerable ask.
I've been working on this story for years. Well, more accurately, Mary Slawter and I have been working on telling her life story for years. We get together at her house, go through photos, books, and papers and talk about her life. Here's some of what's to come in a photo essay book on her life:
  • How growing up after World War II in Westville, New Jersey shaped her.
  • What she was thinking and feeling as a young novice pledging her life to the Medical Mission Sisters.
  • How her experiences as a nurse and then a midwife, traveling from New Jersey to Santa Fe then to Ghana, Thailand to Paris, Alabama to Atlanta and Florida, then Maine to North Carolina, made her commit to making sure every woman and baby she served had the very best health care.
  • What we can learn from her insights as a midwife, a woman falling in love, and as a person figuring it all out.
It's the love story of midwifery and community, a story about the importance of stillness and listening to that small inner voice we all have.
She's 85 now and after the loss of dear family and friends this year, time is of the essence. Her story needs to be told, and it needs to be out in the world now.
Here's where you come in. I have about two solid months of focused work left to complete the book, and I need financial support (you know: paying the bills) to focus on it. If I can really put my full attention on this alone, it will be ready for publication. Your support can help us get this story out into the world. It really is one for the ages.
I would be grateful, and Mary would be too. Like every midwife, she's patient, but it's time for everyone to meet this baby.
Thanks, you guys.
