Hi, my name is Adam, and I'm fundraising for my incredible wife, Laura. She is currently in the hospital fighting calciphylaxis, a rare and extremely painful condition, along with complications from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). This is our story, and we desperately need your help to bring her home and begin her long-term recovery.

A Long and Tireless Battle

This isn't a new fight for her; it’s a marathon of medical challenges that have been going on for many years. Laura's strength has been tested by at least seven separate surgical procedures in the last year alone, with various procedures and anesthesia events becoming a frequent part of our lives. Her weeks are filled with back-to-back appointments and infusions, with a range of specialists, from nephrology and cardiology to wound care and physiatry. She is constantly being treated by different doctors, ranging from internal medicine to infectious disease, and everything in between.

Her most recent health crisis began with an unexpected and severe setback following a surgical procedure in June. On June 20th, just three days after a surgical procedure, (and 2 days after her birthday on June 18th), she was rushed to the hospital with a high fever and severe pain. This led to the discovery of a systemic fungal infection that landed her in the ICU for 18 days where we almost lost her. She spent a total of 64 days in the hospital before finally being released on August 26th.

Our relief was short-lived. Just one week later, on September 3rd, we were back in the hospital. Laura was readmitted with symptoms resembling necrotizing fasciitis, a devastating flesh-eating disease. It was during this hospitalization that she was diagnosed with calciphylaxis, a disease common with end-stage renal disease. This is a serious disease that causes calcium to build up in her blood vessels, and leads to painful, non-healing wounds. The pain she endures is immense.

The Road to Recovery: Our Focus Is Bringing Her Home

While much of her in-hospital medical care is covered by insurance, the costs associated with her long-term recovery are quickly adding up. We are now focused on getting her home safely and preparing our house to meet her needs. Your donations will go directly toward essential expenses not covered by insurance.

Here is a breakdown of what your support will help us provide for Laura:

• Medical Equipment: Due to the severity of the wounds caused by calciphylaxis and her weakened state from CKD, Laura has limited mobility. We urgently need a wheelchair and other equipment to help her move around safely at home and attend her many follow-up appointments. These tools are crucial for preventing falls and further injury to her fragile skin.

• Home Accessibility: Our home is not equipped for someone with her limited mobility. We need to install a medical ramp at our front door to allow her to get in and out of the house. Inside, we must make critical modifications to our bathroom, including installing grab bars and a shower chair, to ensure she can manage her hygiene safely and with dignity. These changes are essential for her safety and to prevent re-hospitalization.

• Loss of Income: This long journey has taken a toll on our family's finances. As her primary caregiver, I am unable to work full-time. Your support will help us cover basic living expenses, like rent and utilities, and make up for my lost wages during this difficult time. This will allow me to focus on caring for Laura without the constant stress of financial instability.

Laura is a loving mother, a caring friend, and the most resilient person I have ever known. She has an incredible sense of humor and a joyful spirit that shines through even in her most difficult moments. This is who Laura is; full of life and love, despite everything she's been through.
