At just 24, my sister, Kaysee Okumura has spent almost half of her life walking in and out of doctors’ offices. In the last four years, she has received treatment for several different health issues including Hashimotos, Hypothyroidism, Epstein-Barr Virus, Cytomegalovirus, Mycotoxin Illness, Gastroparesis, Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, Candida, and Parasites.
Recently, she was diagnosed with Lyme Disease - a chronic bacterial infection that affects her physical functionality, as well as neurologic tendencies. All of the countless treatments, doctor visits, lab work, and medication are not covered by insurance.
Over the years, I have seen the effects that these conditions have taken on her - preventing her from living a normal life. She has gone from a happy, active, goal-driven young adult, ahead of her career, to someone who put a pause on her entire life and has become extremely weak. She wakes up every day under a lot of physical and emotional stress because her body is not functioning right, as it relies on strict daily protocols to get her through the day.
Having seen countless specialists in Hawai’i that couldn’t help her, she moved to California to receive care. She is now under close watch by an incredible Infectious Disease doctor. Our family misses her presence dearly and want to bring her home as soon as possible.
My sister is the strongest, most positive, optimistic person that I know. She works really hard; my hope is that we can relieve some of the financial stress on her to help complete her mission and make sure she doesn’t skip any treatment due to costs.
