Bring K and Her Kids Back to Safety

GOAL: $1900 for for single mom fleeing DV

Hi! I’m posting this on behalf of my friend, K. K is not the type to ask for help, and would only do so if absolutely necessary, but this is a huge need for K + her kiddos.

K is from SC, but is currently displaced with her kids in a different state where they know no one and have no support or village around.

She fled an extremely abusive long-term relationship last year with nowhere to go to provide herself and her babies safety, so they had to enter a domestic violence shelter. They lost their home, community, pets, and most of their belongings in the process.

K has spent tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees in order to gain emergency custody and an order for protection for the family, to salvage and move what belongings were possible to salvage, lost/spent an exorbitant amount of money on moving fees and lost money to the landlord of the home they had to flee because the abuser left belongings K was charged for storing/moving, and due to this, the security deposit was also withheld, as well as utilities owed.

K also has an inordinate amount of health issues and cptsd as a result of the many many years of physical, financial, and emotional abuse.

One of K's children is autistic. The child can’t receive proper supportive services due to being displaced to a different county, and the DV shelter being classified as a "time exempt facility" as well as shelter confidentiality issues. Bureaucratic red tape.

The shelter itself is a distressing environment to live in as is it a communal space full to the brim with people from all walks of life, different schedules, various types of families with different parenting styles, lots of chaos, but it is especially distressing for the autistic child, who is experiencing skill regression from the ongoing environmental stressors in the shelter.

The family has been there for SEVERAL months, with unfortunately no end in sight because of the current nationwide housing crisis. All family members are experiencing skill regression and burnout from the shelter environment.

The shelter is located in a town with very few job opportunities and the children are struggling in the new schools/town because it is so different than what they are accustomed to.

The family received a housing voucher but has been scammed out of hundreds of dollars in application fees from landlords who knew they would not accept the housing voucher, but took the application fee and denied the family housing anyway despite K maintaining a clean rental history and record. It has been extremely difficult for the family to find housing, and goalposts keep moving to obtain this government housing with this government housing voucher.

K has always been a hard worker and has never really relied on subsidies or government assistance so it has been difficult learning and adjusting.

The goal is to raise at least $1900 to catch K up on some owed legal fees and then get K and her kiddos back home with family and friends where they can have a village and be safe from their abuser or any potential retaliation from him, obtain childcare, and K get back to work.

Names and identifying info has been kept minimal for the family's confidentiality and collective safety.

If anyone could please donate, share, or just send good vibes!
