3 weeks ago, Dixie, the beautiful mare you see in the picture, left our care and went to what was supposed to be a safe and caring home. This family had references, etc., and was extremely kind and caring when we met with them. Upon Dixie’s arrival, the woman who had her claimed she was lame and had a vet out. No vet records were ever shared, just that “they thought it was something in her shoulder.” She had never taken a lame or wrong step with us.
As we have the family’s gelding, we discussed options such as returning her to us or selling her with the condition that we be informed of the sale. The woman claimed she would take a few days to see how Dixie did (hoping it was just a fluke occurrence) and agreed to keep us updated. We have not heard from her since then. 11/06 we discovered Dixie had been posted by Southern Wisconsin Second Chance Lot. A feed lot that ships horses to Mexico or Canada for slaughter. Immediately upon discovery, we reached out to the woman who then refused any contact or conversation.
Our only goal currently is to get Dixie home and have her safety ensured. She is an absolute wonder of a mare and it’s unfortunate this woman and her family did not feel the same.
