Living Room Opera (LRO) and our first production, ¡Dime!, need your support. Please consider donating!
This new opera company was born in a communal household in Boston, MA during the COVID-19 quarantine, when three friends brought their talents together to make the global pandemic more bearable. After months of performance cancellations and of seeing our livelihoods threatened, we decided to create an opera from the safety of our home.
LRO's goal is to demystify the operatic experience by bringing this art form off the big stage and into people's homes. Though opera has a long-lived history, we want to produce relatable stories that speak to a diverse audience made up of different ages, races, income brackets, and life perspectives. We want opera to be for everybody!
¡Dime! is a new opera in four acts composed by Sergio Martinez and written by Bailey Merlin.
This opera tells the story of Hector and Ximena, a long term couple with new roots in the United States, as both characters receive life-altering news. For Ximena, a promotion; for Hector, the death of his father. While both characters strive on paths that suit their ambitions, they are shackled: Ximena by a family that’s only ever wanted her to be a wife and mother, and Hector who was raised to press down his emotions under threat of violence.
This opera has already been written and composed, it is ready to be performed. Our plan is to rehearse, stage, perform, and live-stream ¡Dime! from our communal home in March of 2021. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we do not have the means to go forward with this production unless we receive your help. We are asking for your support because, to achieve our objective, we will need to cover the following expenses:

Aunque la ópera tiene un gran bagaje historico, queremos enfocarnos en historias que apelen a una audiencia diversa compuesta de diferentes edades, razas, niveles de ingresos y perspectivas de vida. ¡Queremos que la ópera sea para todos!

Esta ópera cuenta la historia de Héctor y Ximena, una pareja recientemente establecida en Estados unidos, quienes reciben noticias que les cambiarán la vida. Para Ximena, una promoción; para Héctor, la muerte de su padre. Si bien ambos personajes luchan por sus ambiciones, se encuentran encadenados: Ximena por una familia que solo ha querido que sea esposa y madre, y Héctor, que fue criado para reprimir sus emociones bajo la amenaza de violencia.
Esta ópera ya ha sido escrita y compuesta, está lista para ser interpretada! Nuestro plan es ensayar, escenificar, actuar y transmitir ¡Dime! en directo desde nuestra casa comunal en marzo de 2021. Sin embargo, debido a la pandemia de COVID-19, no tenemos los medios para seguir adelante con esta producción a menos que recibamos su ayuda. Solicitamos su apoyo porque, para lograr nuestro objetivo, necesitaremos cubrir los siguientes gastos:
