MAPUTO — A Song Of The Imagination & From My Heart

Hi, I am David Salako,

I am a passionate creator and I have poured my energy and soul into creating a track that means the world to me — a love song called “Maputo”.

Named after the vibrant capital of Mozambique in Southern Africa, “Maputo” is more than just music — it is a story, a journey, a soundscape inspired by the rhythms, memories, and resilience of a place that holds emotional and memorable meaning. A track inspired by the poetry of migration, the dream of being heard, and missing home.

When I was about 8 or 9 years old, I went on an international trip with my mother and two younger sisters. We flew on a VC-10 aircraft of the now defunct airline East African Airways. I do not recall if we were heading towards or heading back home from a visit to Malawi where my maternal family are mainly from.

What I do remember was how cold it was in July/August and being fascinated by the “reversal” in the seasons of the Southern Hemisphere. Geography and studying maps was one of my favorite things to do and transiting through Lourenço Marques Airport in Maputo, Mozambique was the furthest south (and furthest east) in the world I had ever been at that point. Even further south east than Malawi.

The four-engine jet plane was one of those designs where passengers could exit out of the “butt” of the aircraft underneath the very loud jet engines that were also positioned at the rear of the plane.

I vividly recall the colorful stripes of the livery of the airline, as well as listening to the languages spoken by the airport officials and other passengers which were mainly Portuguese and XiRonga.

The few hours we spent in Maputo before we continued on our sojourn left an indelible impression on my imagination. It was a heady mix of cultures, races, and ethnicities. I cannot leave out that Indian Ocean sea air too.

After many, many months (years) of writing, recording demos, and refining this song, I am finally ready to make a polished version or versions and share "Maputo" with the world.

It is said that anything that is great indeed takes a long time to come to fruition.

“Maputo” is one of a total of 12 songs that I have worked on and refined with talented musician collaborators in Houston, Texas, and Lilongwe, Malawi over the last few years. Out of those 12 songs, I believe 5 are of the quality that is worthy of an initial EP (extended play) release with “Maputo” being the first single.
