- Hello, I’m Ana Mehalyak. My aunt Phyllis has been in ALF for 3 years after a terrible fall which broke her leg/hip. Phyl had everything in her life turned upside down. The only thing in her life that mattered was her beloved cat, Goo-b. We took care of her cat, Goo-b, till he passed away from kidney disease last year. Most ALF or nursing homes do not allow pets to stay with them. After Goo-b died, my Aunt Phyl has declined in health physically and mentally. She’s been so depressed after losing her beloved cat. Research has shown how much animal therapy can improve an elderly person's health. I have witnessed this personally when I periodically take her to a local place called “The Kitty Cup.” It’s a cat cafe where you can have time with cats in a room that are up for adoption looking for their forever home. Recently, we’ve been told she can have a cat in her room. She doesn’t know anything about it yet. A cat to care for would give her a reason to live and help her depression. The elderly tend to feel abandoned and lonely. Since she is still waiting to get on Medicaid, funds to pay for all the supplies to get her started for the care of an animal are in short supply. She recently had cataract surgery on both eyes, & it was expensive. I’m asking for help with buying a Litter-Robot 4 cat box, a cat tower/furniture desk to help Phyllis with her mobility issues
- because she uses a walker and has leg/back pain. So the special items I suggested would prevent her from bending over or lifting. Unfortunately, those items aren’t cheap. Just the Litter-Robot is $699.
- The rest of the funds would help with adoption fees, a cat tower, food, litter, and of course some vet costs in advance for vaccines and grooming. I hope that this reaches those that have a love of animals and seeing the joy they bring to the elderly.
