Bring Comfort to Mom: Support Her Recovery

It's finally time for Mom to come home! For a few weeks, at least.
in February 2024 Mom started battling an infection in her left hip that was replaced in 2014. She had 2 incision and drainage surgeries to clean up the infection and tissue, 6 weeks of IV antibiotics (which lead to her having 2 DVTs in her left arm), as well as having a wound vac attached to her left hip 24/7 for 7 months.
On 3/17/25 Mom had surgery to remove the infected hardware, completely clean out the hip joint, placement of a temporary spacer and another wound vac application. She was started on a 12 week course of IV antibiotics and transferred to an inpatient rehabilitation unit. On 3/27 Mom's spacer completely displaced and she was readmitted for a second surgery to replace the spacer. The new tissue cultures taken from the second surgery grew a brand new bacteria which resulted in having to start back at square one with her IV antibiotic course. After her second spacer surgery on 4/7, we attempted to transfer her to a short-term rehabilitation facility in Hillsboro, so she could be closer to home. Due to complications with medical equipment, she was readmitted to the hospital for another stay. After this admission, she stayed at a different short-term rehabilitation facility for a few weeks.

On 5/15 she her third large surgery for a muscle flap. This involved taking a piece of muscle from her anterior thigh and placing the muscle into her open left hip wound to help facilitate new blood flow and in-turn help facilitate wound healing. On 5/22 she was transferred to another inpatient rehabilitation hospital for extensive 3 hour long Physical and Occupational therapy per day. We made this decision as a family to prepare Mom to come home, where we feel she will do her best healing.

Although she is being discharged home, there will still be 2 more surgeries in Mom's future. After the wound/muscle flap has healed, she will need another surgery to place a skin graft over the closed/healed wound. After the skin graft and completion of her IV antibiotic course she will have what will HOPEFULLY be her last and final surgery to put in the permanent hip implant. The time-line for these last 2 surgeries are still to be determined.

While she awaits these surgeries and heals in the comfort of her own home she will still need extensive medical care. She has a lovely home-health nurse that will be doing her wound vac dressing changes 3 days a week (we Love you Mrs. Loretta) and looking after her PICC. Besides the above, my parents will be responsible for administering her 2 IV antibiotics around the clock (5 times a day). Since my mom does not have a hip and cannot walk, all of the daily household chores and responsibilities will fall on my dad. All transportation from Hillsboro to Fort Worth & back for doctors appointments & possible hyperbaric treatments will fall on my parents to coordinate and pay out of pocket. It would be so very helpful to have Visiting Angels be able to come a few days a week to spend a few hours helping Mom with hygienic tasks as well as help dad with a few chores here and there. Hiring a home care provider such as this is not covered by insurance and all costs will be out-of-pocket.

I (Paige) have been asked by several friends if I could please start a GoFundMe for friends to make monetary donations to help with the cost of responsibilities; Visiting Angels, house keeper, gas, and transportation. If you are able to donate, I appreciate you more than words will ever be able to express. If you are not able to that is fine as well & I just ask for continued prayers for mental and physical healing!

I will continue to post updates on social media as this road to recovery is a long one. I appreciate and love you all! THANK YOU!
