Bring Comfort and Care to Andy Kaiser

Frank " Andy" Kaiser is my brother. He served for over 40 years with the Sheriff departments of Orange and Osceola counties, before moving to TSA at our Orlando Airport.

Andy is widely regarded as fun, sociable and willing to tell the wildest story ever. He loved prospecting for gold in Chicken, Alaska and helping others. He has every tool and device sold in Home Depot and would give you the shirt off his back. Hats, did I mention Souvenir hats, I think he has one for all of his vacations and events. Andy loved his friends and co-workers.

Andy suffered a medical event in September and although it looks like a stroke to me, the scans are negative. He fell in his garage and was not found for 3 days. Luckily, the garage door was up and at some point, a neighbor saw him and called 911. The next 5 days were critical, and we didn't think he would make it.

He now resides in a nursing home and has his good days and fuzzy days. His old term memory is great, and he enjoys talking about past arrests and takedowns. His right side is weak; he has no ability to transfer from bed to chair or stand.

I am asking for help to help pay a private care giver to be with him a few hours a week, mostly during mealtimes, to get him up in a chair and maybe go outside to have breakfast or lunch. He needs someone who is there as a friend and sometimes to give him " push back" with every answer to questions are " NO" Do you want to eat? NO Do you want to get up "NO" Do you want to watch a movie " NO" In a facility, even if the patient has dementia, if they say "NO" then it's no, no meals, no insulin, no medication, no nothing. Andy needs a bit of PUSH BACK. And he will cuss at you, which is always endearing.

I currently live near Dallas, TX, so having a consistent person that sees Andy several times a week will be crucial. I have been flying back and forth since this happened and I will be making some hard decisions for myself soon. Some of the funds are needed for me to keep coming back for him. I know I am asking a lot. In thinking back over the past few weeks, I have realized just how many people love my brother and want to help. Please consider helping to provide my brother with conversation and dignity. Karen,
