Help Us Solve the Mystery of the Lost Boys of Hannibal
My name is Franki Cambeletta, and for the past five years, I’ve dedicated my life to uncovering the truth behind one of the most heartbreaking mysteries in Hannibal, Missouri: the disappearance of Billy Hoag, Joey Hoag, and Craig Dowell. On May 10, 1967, these three adventurous boys—brothers Billy (11) and Joey (13), along with their friend Craig (14)—vanished while exploring caves near their hometown, a place immortalized by Mark Twain’s tales of adventure. They were full of life, dreams, and curiosity, with Joey even signing his journal as “Amateur Astronomer Joel Hoag,” dreaming of a future among the stars. But that day, their story was cut short, leaving their families, friends, and community in a state of grief and unanswered questions that has lingered for over half a century.
Through our award-winning podcast, Lost Boys of Hannibal, my co-host Chris Koetters and I have tirelessly pursued leads, interviewed witnesses, and worked with the Hoag family, local law enforcement, and the community to piece together what happened. We’ve uncovered new clues, including the possibility that the boys may be in a hidden “big room” within a cave system, potentially sealed off by a cave-in caused by road construction in 1967. Recent advancements in technology, like LIDAR and modern drilling techniques, give us hope that we can finally explore this uncharted area and bring closure to the families and the Hannibal community.
Our Mission: A Final Push to Find the Boys
We are launching a critical effort to drill into the top of a cave system where we believe the boys may be. This is not just a search for answers—it’s a mission to honor Billy, Joey, and Craig, to give their families peace, and to preserve their legacy. But we can’t do it alone. We need your help to make this possible.
We are aiming to raise $50,000 to cover the costs of this ambitious project. This funding will support:
Drilling and Construction: Hiring specialized boring contractors to safely drill into the cave system and map its geology with advanced equipment like LIDAR. This requires heavy machinery and skilled labor to ensure the operation is safe and effective.
Equipment: High-tech tools for exploration, including cameras, lighting, and safety gear to navigate the cave’s intricate passages.
Production Crew: A professional crew to document this historic effort, ensuring the story is told with respect and shared with the world through our podcast and upcoming documentary.
Food and Overnight Stays: Supporting our team of searchers, contractors, and volunteers who will work around the clock in Hannibal, Missouri, during the operation.
Site Restoration: Covering the costs to responsibly close and secure the site after the search, preserving the natural environment.
Why This Matters
For 58 years, the families of Billy, Joey, and Craig have lived with unimaginable pain, not knowing what happened to their loved ones. The Hannibal community still feels the weight of this loss, a wound that has never healed. These boys were not just names in a story—they were sons, brothers, and friends who loved exploring, dreaming, and embracing the spirit of adventure that defined their hometown. Joey’s journal, filled with notes about the stars, reminds us of the bright futures stolen from them. Every clue we uncover, every step we take, is a chance to honor their memory and bring answers to those who have waited far too long.
Our podcast has connected with thousands of listeners worldwide, earning the 26th Annual Communicator Award for Excellence in Podcast Documentary Series. We’ve worked closely with the Hoag family, local authorities, and the Missouri Department of Transportation to pursue every lead. Now, with your support, we can take the most significant step yet: a physical search that could finally solve this mystery.
How You Can Help
Your donation, no matter the size, will bring us closer to uncovering the truth. Here’s how your contribution can make a difference:
$25 provides meals for our team for a day, keeping them fueled for the search.
$50 covers safety gear for a volunteer, ensuring they can work securely in the cave.
$100 helps fund LIDAR scans to map the cave’s hidden chambers.
$250 supports a day of drilling operations, bringing us closer to the truth.
$500 or more helps cover major equipment costs, making this mission possible.
Every dollar counts, and every share of this campaign amplifies our voice. By donating, you’re not just supporting a search—you’re joining a movement to bring closure, honor the boys’ legacy, and show the world that no mystery is too old to solve when a community comes together.
A Promise to the Boys and Their Families
Billy, Joey, and Craig deserve to be found. Their families deserve answers. And the Hannibal community deserves closure. We are committed to pursuing this search with the utmost respect, professionalism, and determination. As we embark on this “Boots on the Ground” effort, we carry the hope of generations who have never forgotten these boys.
Please, donate today and share this campaign with your friends, family, and networks. Together, we can shine a light into the darkness and bring the Lost Boys of Hannibal home. After we resolve this case and we are victorious, we plan on taking the funds and doing the boys Memorial.
With gratitude and determination,
Franki Cambeletta & Chris Koetters
