Help Gorongosa Town's Children Experience Christmas Joy!
Hello! I’m Gabriela Curtiz, a Business major at Boise State University and a proud native of Gorongosa, a vibrant village in Mozambique’s Sofala Province—one of the world’s most underserved regions. Growing up here, I’ve experienced firsthand how holiday seasons often pass without gifts, festive meals, or the simple joys that Christmas can bring.
This year, the ongoing El Niño phenomenon has made life even more challenging for Gorongosa and other areas of central Sofala Province. The severe drought brought on by this climate event has devastated local agriculture, leaving families who rely on their crops in a difficult position. El Niño, a recurring climate pattern, disrupts typical weather cycles and often brings hotter, drier conditions to Mozambique and much of southern Africa. According to Mozambique’s National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), nearly 220,000 people in Sofala Province are now at risk of food insecurity, with over 146,000 hectares of crops, primarily maize, already lost. Despite these hardships, I am determined to make a difference by giving the children of Gorongosa a Christmas they’ll never forget, filled with joy and holiday spirit.
The Mission
Gorongosa is a community filled with resilience and hope, yet many families encounter hardships that make celebrating Christmas nearly impossible. For the children, this often means a holiday season without gifts, treats, or the simple joys of childhood. I am raising funds to host a Christmas celebration that will light up their lives with laughter, happiness, and the spirit of giving.
What We Aim to Provide
With your generous support, we aspire to host a Christmas party that promises a day full of fun, featuring games, music, and entertainment for the children. Our goal is to serve delicious meals and festive snacks, ensuring that every child enjoys a wonderful feast during the celebration. We also plan to give gifts, including toys and school supplies, to brighten their holiday season and support their learning. Ultimately, we want to create a lasting impact by fostering community spirit and reminding these children that they are cherished and valued.
How You Can Help
I’m reaching out to friends, family, and kind-hearted individuals like you to help turn this vision into reality. There are several ways you can contribute. Monetary contributions of any amount will directly aid the event and facilitate the acquisition of gifts for the children. For instance, a donation of just $15 can supply meals for two children, allowing them to enjoy a festive meal during the celebration. Regardless of your contribution, every donation plays a vital role in enhancing the joy for these children who are in greatest need. I would also encourage you to share this initiative with your network, as spreading the word will help us connect with more people who may want to bring joy to the children of Gorongosa Village.
Final Thoughts
This Christmas event is only the start of the transformation I hope to see. After graduating this fall, I plan to return to Gorongosa with a heart full of purpose and a commitment to fostering growth, creating opportunities, and improving lives, particularly for children. My goal is to use my education to uplift my community, showing these children that they matter and that they are part of a world that cares about them.
Let us gather together this Christmas to make a significant difference in the lives of Gorongosa's youngsters. By collaborating, we can share the excitement of the holiday season and help create wonderful memories that they will treasure forever. Your generosity and support mean everything to us, and we really appreciate any aid you can provide.
Thank you for joining us on this journey to bring pleasure and hope to Gorongosa.
