Bring Back Oreo's Vision: Support His Surgery

This is Oreo--the spunky, loving and nearly criminally adorable Chihuahua-mix that is the heart of our family (along with Rocky, our other amazing doggo).

Since he arrived in our home as a tiny 3-week old pup from our neighbor's dog's litter, he has surprised us. First by turning the tawny blonde and white he is now when he was born black and white like his mother and siblings (hence the name Oreo). Second by quickly melting my mother's heart and having her abandon her staunch "no pets" rule. Third by embracing our rescue Rocky as his brother after being the king of the castle for most of his life.

Now, as an 11 year-old, Oreo has surprised us in a different way. About 3 or so months ago, we started to notice that Oreo was becoming less active and urinating more. He quickly started to lose weight and his eyes started to lighten in color. Unfortunately, due you financial constraints, we were not able to get him treated right away. We were finally able to get him seen by a vet and was diagnosed with diabetes and cataracts. He was put on an insulin routine but sadly the cataracts suddenly matured and he is now blind.

After seeing an ophthalmologist, our little lion is a perfect candidate for cataract surgery to restore his eyesight and prevent further eye damage and inflammation. In order to help Oreo see again, we need to pay $6500 for surgery and aftercare. That is why we are here. This is our goal. Blindness has dulled our little guy a bit, but we are assured that he will be back at it as before after the surgery.

We are looking to not only have his cataracts removed, but also to have a full teeth cleaning as well done before surgery to reduce the risk of infection per ophthalmologist recommendation.

Any amount of help is appreciated and even if you can't donate, all we ask is for you to share this with the people in your life and send positive energies to our Oreo.

Este es Oreo, el valiente, cariñoso y casi criminalmente adorable chihuahua mestizo que es el corazón de nuestra familia (junto con Rocky, nuestro otro increíble perrito).

Desde que llegó a nuestra casa como un pequeño cachorro de tres semanas de la camada del perro de nuestro vecino, nos ha sorprendido. Primero, al cambiar su pelaje a rubio rojizo y blanco, que es el que tiene ahora, desde el blanco y negro con el que nació, como su madre y sus hermanos (de ahí salió el nombre de Oreo). Segundo, al derretir rápidamente el corazón de mi madre y hacer que abandonara su firme regla de «no tener mascotas». Tercero, al aceptar a nuestro perro rescatado Rocky como su hermano después de haber sido el rey del castillo durante la mayor parte de su vida.

Ahora, con 11 años, Oreo nos ha sorprendido de otra manera. Hace unos tres meses, empezamos a notar que Oreo estaba cada vez menos activo y orinaba más. Rápidamente empezó a perder peso y sus ojos comenzaron a aclararse. Desgraciadamente, debido a nuestras limitaciones económicas, no pudimos llevarlo al veterinario de inmediato. Finalmente pudimos llevarlo al veterinario y le diagnosticaron diabetes y cataratas. Le recetaron insulina, pero, por desgracia, las cataratas maduraron repentinamente y ahora está ciego.

Después de visitar a un oftalmólogo, nuestro pequeño león es un candidato perfecto para una cirugía de cataratas que le permita recuperar la vista y evitar más daños e inflamación en los ojos. Para ayudar a Oreo a volver a ver, necesitamos pagar 6500 dólares por la cirugía y los cuidados posteriores. Por eso estamos aquí. Este es nuestro objetivo. La ceguera ha afectado un poco a nuestro pequeño, pero estamos seguros de que volverá a ser como antes después de la cirugía.

No solo queremos que le extirpen las cataratas, sino que también le hagan una limpieza dental completa antes de la cirugía para reducir el riesgo de infección, siguiendo las recomendaciones del oftalmólogo.
