Bring Amelia Back Home

Story

My younger sister Amelia (28) has been struggling with mental illness. She has 3 young kid ages 2-9. She is being treated for bipolar disorder and ptsd. A few weeks ago, she dissociated so badly she didn’t recognize herself, couldn’t remember who she was, or even how she old she is. She didn’t believe her parents were her parents, that I was her sister, or her children were her children. She ended up getting violent with our mom, cops were called (and informed this was a mental health crisis) she was arrested, put in jail for resisting arrest, and eventually released without being treated. A few days later another violent episode happened, cops were called again, she was put into psychiatric care and was put on meds. She had been doing so much better, taking her meds, feeling like herself again, talking about the future, gardening, writing a script for a movie. Yesterday, she had an arraignment for resisting arrest during the first incident. They wouldn’t let my mom go in with her to help explain what had happened, and it went really poorly. The courts filed a restraining order against her in my parents name without their knowledge or consent. They’ve threatened her with a 1-7 years in prison if she goes within 100 feet of them or even tries to call them. She lives with my parents, so this means she would be homeless if she obeys the restraining order. She got scared and ran out of the courthouse with a backpack and no phone and none of us have heard from her since yesterday. Her meds don’t work if she doesn’t get proper sleep, so I’m terrified this will trigger another dissociative episode. The system has completely failed her, and pulled the rug out from her when she was finally doing better and getting treatment. None of us want her to be homeless. The situation between her and my parents is complicated, but the last thing anyone wants is her out on the streets off her medication. She was going to therapy. She was taking her meds. My parents do not want this restraining order against her, and the courts have basically told them “too bad”. The fact that this is all happening during a global pandemic makes this even more terrifying. We need a lawyer to help sort this out to get her back home so she can keep recovering. This whole thing has put such a huge financial strain on us.I know there is so much hurt in the world right now, and we all have so much going on, but if you can spare a few bucks to go towards legal fees, my family and I would be so grateful.
