My name is John Balian. I recently moved to LA, where I’ve had the opportunity to work on several high-profile sets, including American Idol, Beast Games, an unreleased Netflix show titled Funny AF, several major music video shoots—including Twenty One Pilots—and more.

Film isn’t just a hobby to me. It’s my life. It’s what I’ve always sought out to do. Prior to moving to LA, I lived in Chicago for five years, where I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts from DePaul University with a concentration in Directing and Animation. Before Chicago, I lived in Michigan for 18 years. From my freshman year of high school to today, I’ve made over 30 short films, some of which have earned acclaim at my university’s film festival, as well as being selected by the Academy Award–qualifying festival RIIFF.

By making this feature film, I’m not only taking a leap toward my career and my dream of being a filmmaker—I’m also showcasing Michigan and everything it has to offer. I love Michigan. I love the seasons, the sports, the people. There isn’t a single part of Michigan that I don’t love. My goal with Celestial is to make a great film, yes, but also to bring business and recognition to my hometown of Lake Orion.
