My daughter Sabrina has been suffering from the disease of Anorexia nervosa for approximately 5 years. Her diminishing health is at an all time critical state and she requires specialized treatment as her life is in the balance. Her body is beginning to shut down and the treatment that Sabrina requires is anywhere from $65,000-$85,000. I have exhausted all of my resources on medical care. We have been to hospitals, doctors, dietitians, nutritionists, and she has been turned away from most services, because her body weight is far below the acceptable range. She is a liability to most hospitals. Due to her state, specialized in-patient treatment is the only option, These programs are limited in availability and if we do not get help now, she will slowly wither away to nothing, leading to her death.
Anorexia nervosa is a serious health problem not only because of its rising incidence, but also because it has one of the highest mortality rates of any psychiatric disorder. Sabrina is 5'10 and weighs roughly 85 pounds. There are some days she is unable to get out of bed. She is not able to shower unless someone is home to help, at times it is necessary for her to crawl to simply use the restroom. She is currently experiencing heart palpitations, which are early stages of a heart failure. Her digestive system is completely shutting down, and her blood pressure is at an all time low. Her brain lacks nutrition, and so is unable to think clearly or remember much. She is an extremely bright young lady, whose body is betraying her with the disease of anorexia & desperately wants help.
It is unbearable watching your daughter dying. This disease has stolen her life, the ability to have friends, attend school or work. As a mother, having to stop the car so she can get out and throw-up is heart wrenching. She has no control as her body will not hold any food or liquid anymore. I am so powerless over this disease, and the affect it has had on her life.
We are in the process of hospitalizing her locally, hoping for stabilization, so that she can be moved to a treatment center that I cannot afford. I would be so grateful to anything anyone can donate to her life. It's exasperating to feel like you are unable to help your child due to the cost of treatment.
