Refuge after Hurricane Dorian - Brigitte & Donnie

Donation protected
Please help us gather funds for materials to build our parents a small home with us in the USA.

Our parents, Brigitte & Donnie Carey have had their possessions and home destroyed by Hurricane Dorian. They have no insurance or savings and are unable to rebuild without assistance. Brigitte’s livelihood of painting has been cut off - all materials, tools and finished work have been lost.

We aim to assist our parents in this time of homelessness, and we need your help to fund the purchase of building materials for a small house in the US.

The Plan:
Design a simple, small home, to be constructed in about a year, on land donated by one of Brigitte’s daughters in Maine. This will provide a safe place for Brigitte and Donnie to live during hurricane seasons in the future.

The structure will be built by skilled friends volunteering their time - we are builders and have a large network of friends who are also expert craftspeople. In this way we will be able to accomplish our task with a minimal amount of money.

The Story:
Our parents have lived a simple life together in the Bahamas for the last 34 years. Donnie is a native of the Abacos and Brigitte is an artist, she paints watercolors (under the name Brigitte Bowyer). The two of them love the islands deeply and have weathered a lot of big storms. But this last one has left them homeless.

Hurricane Dorian made first landfall just two-tenths of a mile north of the house they built together in 1991 on Tilloo Cay, Abaco, in the northern Bahamas. During the first few hours of the storm, their roof was ripped off by Dorian’s 220mph winds. Rain poured in from above as the 25’ ocean storm surge rose steadily higher up the walls in their living room. They tried to escape outside, but the terrible winds and heaving ocean presented a complete impass outside in the yard. They sheltered inside by the front door for several difficult hours, ready to bolt if the rest of the house began to buckle. Luckily the tiny area they were in didn’t collapse, and once the leading edge of the eye reached Tilloo Cay, our parents managed to make their way to higher ground and found shelter in the single undamaged house on the island. They spent several long days after the hurricane on their ravaged island, their boat having sunk, their home and all possessions destroyed.

Currently our parents are living with Donnie’s oldest son, Matthew in Nassau. They are safe and cared for and we are tremendously grateful that they are alive.
Thank you for taking the time to consider our request.

Kind Regards,

Matthew, Annette, Angela, Marlene, Judd
