The Story
Imagine being a teenager in Accra full of potential, but nobody has ever taken the time to ask you how you’re feeling. Or imagine being a parent who loves their child deeply but feels powerless and has no tools to reach them. That is the reality for thousands of families right now. And £1 from you, yes, just ONE pound, can be part of changing
Let me take you back to 20-plus years ago. Now imagine a young, bubbly, sociable Black girl who had many friends and seemed so full of life. Well, that’s what it looked like from the outside, but from the inside it was a completely different reality. I guess that’s why they say looks can be deceiving. In my early years of life, I struggled with low self-esteem, confidence, and a fear of failure. Reading, writing, and comprehending certain things were a struggle, leading to uncomfortable gut feelings and nervousness. They would be times where I would spend hours in isolation trying to figure out exactly what was wrong with me. I knew there was greatness within me and that God had created me for a greater purpose, but it all seemed very far out of reach. A young girl at heart yet carrying what felt like the weight of the world on her shoulders, that was me.
For some people that have been in the same shoes, maybe it was a discerning teacher at school, an aunty from church, or a cousin who saw a young soul filled with much potential but in need of guidance and a shoulder to lean on. I have to credit my mother for being that pillar of support. She knew the child she had given life to, what she was capable of achieving, and the heights she could reach and wasn’t going to allow the anxious thoughts and low self-esteem to hinder me from realising my full potential. So when you see me fighting to ensure that no young person succumbs to anxious thoughts or low self-esteem, which can be debilitating, it’s because I have been there myself
Why Ghana? Why now?
Nearly 40% of Ghana's population is under 15 years old. These young people are growing up in a world that moves fast, with pressures around identity, mental health, family stress, and an uncertain future. Many of them have never been asked how they feel. Many of their parents were never taught how to connect emotionally with their children.
The result? Teenagers who carry pain in silence. Parents who love their children but don't know how to reach them. Generational cycles of hurt that keep repeating — not because anyone is bad, but because nobody was ever taught any differently.
FLM is here to break that cycle.
Over 6 weeks, young people will take part in:
• 1:1 mentoring sessions to build confidence and emotional self-awareness
• Group workshops on identity, values, emotional intelligence, and leadership
• A career taster day to open their eyes to what is possible
• A graduation celebration honouring their growth
At the same time, their parents will attend the following:
• Weekly group mentoring sessions on emotional intelligence and parenting
• A dedicated parent workshop to equip them with practical tools
• Support to break the emotional patterns they may have inherited themselves
This is not just a program. This is a movement
WHY WE ARE ASKING FOR JUST £1
We are not asking for a lot. We are asking for everyone.
We believe that if enough people each give just £1, we can raise the £11,000 we need to run this pilot program in full. That means 11,000 people each making one small decision that adds up to something life-changing for young people and families in Ghana.
Of course, if you feel moved to give more, every pound above £1 brings us closer to our goal faster. But no gift is too small. £1 is enough. £1 matters.
FLM is led by Ida Agyekum
Ida is a UK-based Ghanaian mental well-being consultant, mentor, and personal development coach with over 15 years of experience. She has spent her career supporting young people aged 4–25 across communities in the UK and Ghana, working with schools, families, and community organizations.
Her mission is clear: to end generational trauma, normalize healing, and build emotionally resilient future leaders one family at a time.
This program has been carefully designed and fully structured and is ready to launch. We have our team, our materials, and our community. What we need now is you!
