This page is designed to raise funds to support the teachers and staff of the Bright Horizons North Durham child care center in Durham, NC in the wake of COVID-19 changes.
We strongly believe that our Bright Horizons teachers and staff are part of our family--caring for our children each day, helping us navigate eating, sleeping and developmental needs, and sharing in our joys as they grow. As parents of the center, we are starting this page to do our part to lessen the challenges our teachers may encounter in paying for housing, food, or critical needs during this uncertain time.
We learned that some teachers and staff are not continuing work due to the high risks of care and more limited roles in the wake of COVID-19 changes. Bright Horizons is providing two weeks of pay and continued enrollment in health benefits; however, we have grown increasingly concerned that many of our teachers may start to experience financial hardship due to their break in employment or changing needs of their own families during this time.
Proceeds from this GoFundMe page will be distributed equally among any of the ~20 North Durham teachers and staff who indicate to us that additional resources would help them weather this period of financial hardship. With the help of the center director, we emailed each of the 20 teachers to inform them of our collective efforts to raise funds and ask them to let us know by Friday, March 27 if their families are in need of financial assistance during this time.
So far 8 teachers have indicated that they would benefit from the assistance. Funds can be used however the families desire to meet their basic needs during this time. We have contacted each staff member via email and have collected their preference for receiving the funds -- either by check or through payment apps like Venmo and Zelle. We plan to drawdown the first round of funding around April 1, so that we can share the funds with teachers by Friday, April 3rd before their 2 weeks of pay from Bright Horizons ends. As we get closer to April 1, we'll share the final number of teachers included, and the anticipated payment amount going to each teacher.
We recognize many of you may also be facing uncertainty in the weeks and months ahead -- limiting your ability to contribute. However, our concern for the financial stability of the Bright Horizons team who care for Flora ultimately drove us to reach out to those of you who are able to provide support, and we hope to have a broader impact.
