I'm a 37 year old mother with two girls, 6 and 10 years old. I also love my career as a nurse. Spending so much time caring for other people, you rarely think about yourself. One day I found a large lump in my breast that did not hurt, was not round, and did not have a "rubbery" feeling to it. So being a nurse knowing those are not good signs, what do I do? I ignore it for awhile, telling myself it will go away, I mean I'm only 37, never had a mammogram what was there to worry about? Finally I sucked it up got checked and could read the doctors faces and I knew it wasn't good. A week later the biopsy results came back and I was ready to laugh at myself for worrying even a little. Instead, it was as if someone took a chair and knocked my legs out from underneath me. It was positive for invasive ductual carcinoma with lymphvascular invasion...fancy way of saying I have an aggressive form of breast cancer. My daughters were all I could think about. I underwent my first surgery 2 weeks later, no good news there; stage 3 with lymph node involvement, and they had found more cancer, I had to go back in for 2 more surgeries. More tests came back as well and again more bad news. I was told I will have to undergo a minimum of 1 year of intense chemo, and a complex double mastectomy after that. I also had to leave my job, and somehow figure out a way to care for my children. Having lost both my parents already, my head was spinning trying to figure out how I'm going to do all of this. Get to and from chemo, get my girls to their activities, and most of all put food on the table for my little girls. I am asking for your help in helping me provide for my children, help paying medical bills, medication costs, keeping a roof over our heads. Every little bit helps, and if you could please find it in your hearts to donate even the smallest amount, my girls and I would be so incredibly greatful.
