Bridging Gaps: Tech Tools for Young Learners

Hi! I’m Kelsey Johnson, a speech-language pathologist with 10 years of experience, and I’ve proudly worked at my current school for nearly six of them. My favorite part of this job is helping kids build the foundational communication skills they need to feel confident and express who they are. My strength lies in using creative, unconventional, and highly engaging activities that make speech therapy feel less like work—and more like discovery.

As someone who serves students in a low-income community, I see every day how the digital divide affects their learning and limits access to the tools that spark creativity and connection. Many of my students don’t have technology at home, and they miss out on the kind of interactive, expressive experiences that support communication development in today’s world.

That’s why I’m requesting an Apple iMac—not just to enhance my professional resources, but to bring powerful educational and creative tools into the therapy experiences I design for my students. This iMac will allow me to access a wide variety of research-based speech/language platforms, develop custom visuals and interactive lessons, and use iMac-exclusive programs to bring therapy to life in ways that are modern, relevant, and motivating.

Specifically, I’ll be using Apple’s Pro Apps Bundle for Education, which includes:
• Final Cut Pro – to help students create visual storytelling projects that build narrative and sequencing skills
• Logic Pro – to explore rhythm, articulation, and prosody through sound and music creation
• Motion – to develop animated therapy visuals that keep kids engaged and focused
• Compressor – to organize and package student-created media for reflection and reinforcement
• MainStage – to integrate live vocal effects and soundscapes into speech activities for a truly immersive experience

While the iMac will be used personally, its purpose is entirely professional. It will directly support the materials I create and the sessions I run—tailored to each student’s individual communication needs. These resources will be especially impactful in a community like ours, where access to creative technology is limited, but student potential is limitless.
