Bridger was diagnosed with heterotrophic ossification in the hospital when he was first injured. Since then he’s had numerous fractures. Recently his bones have gotten so brittle he fractured both hips, 3 vertebrae in his back, and his shin bone. Despite doing the things that help with bone health; PT, standing frame, FES bike, etc. on a daily basis. There was no specific injury he could think of leading to all these fractures. He’s in constant pain. Everytime he moves his hips grind and crunch. He’s been in the hospital the last 20 of 30 days with no real guidance on what to do. The problem he’s facing now one of his hips is so badly fractured the end of the bone is necrotic due to lack of blood flow. Surgery isn’t an option in his case because of how brittle his bones are more would break and there would be more complications. The only hope in potentially saving his bones is hyperbaric oxygen therapy. It hyperboosts oxygen and blood flow to the entire body. Given he can’t stand or bike for a long time. (These things also improve blood flow and oxygen to the legs) All the doctors tell him accept it. Accept you’ll never do your FES bike again. Accept you can never stand in your stand frame again. Accept you’ll have long term complications and hospitalizations. Insurance will not cover this therapy in his situation. The problem being if the necrosis gets too bad it could lead to infection which could lead to more hospital admissions surgery etc. we’re starting this page so he can get hyperbaric oxygen therapy and also see a functional medicine doctor to help him navigate this. We are hopeful his bones will start to heal naturally with some alternative treatments. We all know bridger is a very active person. If we can’t solve some of these problems it will hinder his ability to adaptive surf, kayak, snow ski, mountain bike, go to the beach, swim and even do simple things like stand in his stand frame, bike on his FES bike. Please share or donate what you can. Thank you!
