Bridge the Gap for Rob's Fresh Start in CA

Hi there. My name is Rob, and I’m a 39-year-old licensed massage therapist and certified yoga teacher on my second career coming out of an 18 year office job. I have lived my entire life in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. I’m reaching out because I’m about to take the biggest leap of my life: moving across the country to California, specifically to Half Moon Bay, to start a new career in my dream job in an area that is better suited for this field—and I need your help to land safely.

Why I’m Moving:

After years of dreaming about change, I finally made the decision to move to California for more opportunities, a fresh start, and the chance to grow both personally and professionally. I visited CA recently and, through determination and a little luck, managed to secure a clinical massage therapy job in San Jose and a place in Half Moon Bay, which helped make this dream a possibility. While it’s exciting to step into independence to pursue my passion in helping people with somatic discomfort, it’s also a daunting challenge financially.

My Situation:

Starting part-time. As my clientele grows, I’ll move to full-time, but for now my hours are limited. Once I am in the state I will be looking for other part-time jobs to supplement my income during the transition. 

Monthly Bills:

About $3,000—covering rent, utilities, transportation, and basic living expenses.

Savings:

I don’t have a financial cushion. When I left my full time job to pursue my calling to help people, I used my $15,000 cushion to fund school to get my license for massage therapy. Selling my belongings here in PA and making the drive out to CA will use up most of what I do have.

Support System:

I’m single, have no children, and my family/support network is back East. I’ll be navigating housing, career, and daily life on my own.

Challenges:

The commute to work is about an hour each way, and I'm actively searching for a second part-time job to make ends meet. Despite my efforts, there may be a time when I struggle to cover rent or bills as I get established.

Why I Need Your Help:

Moving cross-country is expensive, and starting over in California is even tougher when you're going solo, working part-time, and trying to build a new life from scratch in a high-cost area. I’m turning to GoFundMe to ask for $5,000 to help bridge the gap during my first few months—covering rent, bills, groceries, and unforeseen expenses so I don’t risk losing housing or falling into debt while I grow my client base and settle in.
