#BriansBrigade Against Cancer

My name is Chad Schlotterbeck. Growing up with my little brother, Brian Schlotterbeck, had its moments and let me tell you what, it was fun. Now that we are older, we must accept that we can’t do some of the stuff we used to back in the day. However, this hits a whole new level of old for us.

This summer my brother thought he got bit by a bug, as this was nothing uncommon  he didn't think anything about it. The strange part was when the swelling continued to get bigger and not go away. Two weeks went by and he went to the doctor to see what was going on. Brian’s world was turned upside down. It was quickly learned that he was suffering from squamous cell cancer affecting the lymph nodes in the neck, throat and tongue.

Once the cancer was identified, it was determined that the best course of action was to go to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN for surgery, treatment, radiation and/or chemo. Brian has surgery tomorrow (October 24) to remove the cancer in his neck, throat and tongue. After surgery, doctors will be able see more of the affected areas and have a better case plan. Brian is expected to be in Rochester during this time and after it heals he will be having treatments. The place and duration of that is still to be determined

Brian and his wife, Becky, are not financially prepared for the cancer treatment costs. The farming economy has not been ideal in this wet 2019 year. On top of the continuous doctor’s appointments, traveling and preparing to be gone for weeks at a time, it has been a struggle for the whole family. Bailey (20) who is in college has been helping at the farm to keep up with the crops and to get ahead of the game before winter starts. Brylie (10) who is a daddy’s girl won’t leave his side.

In this time, it is very difficult for Brian’s family to ask for help and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. Brian is doing his best to be positive and upbeat during this time but know the financial stress is an added burden. We realized we needed to turn to our communities to help the most generous, humorous, kind man that we know. Brian has served with the Air Force and was active duty in Desert Storm.
