Brian is a creator, a veteran, a sculptor, a survivor, a kind heart... and he needs our help. Brian was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in the mid 1980's, and life as he had known it was taken away. "Acute and incurable, I was told that I would slowly lose the use of my body. I would be walking with canes, then I would become wheelchair bound, then bedridden, then..."
Brian is a Veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard (1969-1973) where he served in Search and Rescue. He was awarded the Commendation Medal after he rescued the crew members from a small boat that was stuck out in a stormy ocean. Additionally, he is an alumni of University of Colorado in Boulder Colorado, where he was a competitive weight lifter and a top ranked bicyclist.
MS makes life difficult for Brian. Before it became advanced, be was able to be independent and take care of himself, work in his studio, go to events and show his artwork. Now wheelchair bound and with limited mobility in his left arm, he needs assistance everyday just to live a normal life. He is now unable to reach out, meet people, and get his artwork exposed therefore unable to bring in an income beyond his disability pension. Without additional income, Brian cannot afford home health care, which he needs to be able to continue working, promoting his artwork and supporting himself.
Brian gives credit to the illness for bringing him to his sculpting career. He believes it was the awareness of his life changing that inspired him to begin carving. His art pieces are extensions of his spirit, portraying emotions in ways that words cannot.
Home health care is not only necessary for him to maintain a normal life, it also gives him the opportunity to go to his studio to carve. Brian's art is his passion, his livelihood, and his purpose.
