Life is full of hills and valleys. It is too easy to forget how fragile life really is until something happens to us, or the people close to us, that puts this difficult fact into perspective. At the tender age of 27, Brianna Woods has been recently diagnosed with breast cancer. The reality of this diagnosis hit hard as her biological mother, Kathy Woods passed away of this same terrible disease at 29 years of age. The fear and uncertainty that comes with this has been a wake up call for us all, but her strength through this diagnosis has been astounding. Her smile still shines bright and her positivity about life is inspiring to the many, many people who love her. However, the care and treatment that she needs is an overbearing weight that cannot be overlooked.
Brianna is the beautiful wife of Christopher Brooks and best Mommy to Logan (5 ½ years old) and Mackenzie (18 months). The children, as anyone can imagine, need their mommy in good health to support them throughout their lives as they navigate their own obstacles and reach their own milestones. She is a dedicated and loving daughter, sister and friend to all. Those who know Brianna will tell you that she is a beautiful ray of sunshine with a compassionate heart. She chose to become an RPN so that she could care and advocate for the vulnerable elderly. Just as in her personal life, Brianna consistently puts others before herself, and this is evident in her passion at work. Now it is her time to receive the same love, help and support that she gives to her family and to others every single day.
She received her diagnosis and chose an aggressive path to fight this demonic cancer. She chose to start with a radical left mastectomy and began a course of chemotherapy that will happen every 21 days for at least the next 6 months. She will follow this with 5 weeks of delicate and precise radiation due to the proximity of the original cancer to the heart and risks. She will follow this with additional surgery due to the high genetic risk in her family. As it is impossible to predict the future, it is easy to predict the financial stress that will be caused by all the health related expenses, loss of wages and child care expenses. And of course, all of this will all be compounded by COVID-19. This is only the beginning of a long, hard road for Brianna and her family. We do not know what other obstacles are going to pop up through this process nor what other financial burdens and medical setbacks her family will have to navigate, all on top of a physically and emotionally painful recovery.
Life is full of hills and valleys – right now, circumstances have placed Brianna in a valley. She should not have to climb out of this challenging time on her own and we refuse to stand by and watch her navigate not just her newfound diagnosis, but also the financial burden that this will place on her beautiful family. Her recovery should be the first thing on their minds, not the worries of day to day expenses and additional costs/bills. Anything, and we mean ANYTHING will help them through this challenging time. After all, Brianna treats everyone like her family. Let us pull together as a family to make sure that she receives the love and support that she deserves and help this family through this difficult and challenging time.
