Brian's Fight Against Autoimmune Encephalitis

Hi everyone, this fundraiser is on behalf of Brian Melo –In August 2023, Brian almost lost his life to what doctors now believe to be Autoimmune Encephalitis. Brian had been sick since the beginning of the year. It all started with stomach issues, after many trips to the ER, they still couldn’t find anything wrong with him.

Then, one morning, Brian woke up with numb and tingling legs. Tests showed inflammation in his brain and spine. He was sent to Boston for treatment, and diagnosed with what they thought was Transverse Myelitis. Treatment seemed to help at first, but after Brian was sent home, his symptoms got worse so he was sent back again for more treatment.

While hospitalized at Tufts for Plasma Exchange, Brian had a sudden attack- almost like a stroke- that left him in a coma-like state. He was unable to move or talk and was in extreme pain. After weeks in the ICU, hundreds of tests, and many brain/spine MRIs showing severe inflammation, doctors still couldn’t find the source of the infection.

Brian started to recover slowly with each day. While he regained movement in his arms, his lower body did not fully recover. He has been at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, working hard to get stronger and learn how to live in a wheelchair.

Brian is set to come home soon and could use your support. We're raising funds for things like wheelchair ramps, home modifications, and planning for his future. Many have asked how they can help, and a GoFundMe felt like the best way.
