We are devastated to share the tragic loss of our beloved friend Brian Wiles on Sunday, August 23, 2020. He was an amazing human being with a winning smile and a bright shiny heart. Brian always showed up with a positive vibe and a truly magical ability to make everyone feel welcomed. To know him is to know an Angel.
He had a passion for sailing, photography, house music and Burning Man; But nothing comes close to the love he shared with his adoring family, his beautiful girlfriend Sydnee and his niece and nephew, AJ & Vaughn (who will always share the memories of the “Funcle” that brought adventure and laughter to their young lives).
Brian was on the board of directors at the Jackson Park Yacht Club in Chicago, IL; He was an avid supporter of Black Lives Matter & the LGBTQ community. He was part of the “Mise en Place Team”, a nine-person team which includes six African American sailors and four women. His love for sailing was so strong that you could easily find him spinning house music on his boat or volunteering to teach young kids how to sail. The water was his second home….and Black Rock city was his third.
Over the years Brian would make his annual trip to Burning Man, a community of Artist, Doers and Believers…. just like him. The man was walking Sunshine, like the color of his camp, Big Puffy Yellow. He also loved his Freakeasy & Camp Phuckit Family. If you ever needed a hand or help in anyway, or were just feeling down, Brian was there to lighten your heart and make you smile.
We can hardly believe that this hero is gone. A true hero, who once saved a kitten trapped in a car engine. A hero who rescued many people from the water, including a 90 year old priest who rolled into the lake while strapped into his wheelchair. By pure instinct Brian dove into the water, with no fear or hesitation, and saved the man’s life… and always remained humble in his recounting of the tale. That’s just who Brian was.
We cannot imagine what his family is going through right now, Mothers and Fathers are not supposed to bury their sons, let alone two sons. Unfortunately, this is not unfamiliar territory for the Wiles family, our hearts break for his mother, father, sister…the entire family.
We are asking that you please consider helping his loved ones through this difficult time as the family navigates this tragedy (again) and moves forward in life without him. Donations will go directly to his sister Kelly Wiles, to help with his memorial, celebration of life and future expenses.
“If we could take one lesson from life and Burning Man nothing is permanent. Our life is only a flash. We are only here for a moment and it’s great. Let’s get it before its gone” - Brian Wiles 1974-2020
