Brian Rice was in a terrible accident at 2:20 PM on June 28, 2019. He hit a downed powerline heading home on his 2016 Zero DSR and it caught him right in the face removing his teeth and upper facial bones. His bike is a total loss.
Brian has been an advocate and one of the largest contributors to the Zero Motorcycles community doing many things as a 2 time Zero owner but most know his work creating the Unofficial Zero Manual to help Zero owners do their own repairs or diagnose issues.
Brian has used his electric motorcycle as his only transportation in the SF Bay Area for years, and was out of work for a while struggling financially. This past April he finally found work again and was on track to paying off debt he accrued during his unemployment period.
Once Brian is able to work again, he will not have a motorcycle to ride. I’m starting this GoFundMe to help Brian get a new Zero SR/F once he recovers and is able to ride and go back to work again, although it may be many months.
He just had major surgery yesterday (July 10th) to remove a bone from his leg to be used as parts to make new bones for his face that his body will accept and not reject. It was a pretty serious surgery but he has come out of it well, just has large amounts of bleeding and is under 24 hour watch for complications. But it looks like it will be a success. He will not be able to talk for a long while.
I ask any Zero owner or prospective owner to contribute just $5 to Brian and as a community we can get him back to work again, and also get him to feel something good about a terrible thing that happened to him that none of us here would have been able to avoid. He was riding west into the sun and the powerline was not visible until just moments before he hit it. A tree fell just a minute before Brian passed by Rio Del Mar in west Santa Cruz and the line hit him. Without his helmet on the paramedics say he would have died instantly.
