Just before midnight on April 5, 2019 a Park County Sheriff’s Office vehicle and a passenger vehicle were involved in a head on collision just south of Livingston on Hwy 89S. Unfortunately, the driver of the passenger vehicle, Shawn Schmitz 53 of Columbus, MT, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Deputy Brian Elliott-Pearson was flown by air ambulance to Billings. Montana Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and evidence thus far has revealed that the passenger car left its lane of travel and collided with the deputy in his lane. However, the reason for the vehicle leaving its lane has not yet been determined.
