Imagine yourself sitting in your doctor’s office and being told that you have cancer. Unfortunately, some of you don’t have to imagine it. You know first hand the emotional roller coaster of fear, anger and sadness that can overwhelm you. Now imagine having to face your own mortality while trying to process this tidal wave of emotions.
That was me in 2013. I don’t even have the words to explain how difficult it was, how much it changed my world. Not just my world, but that of my wife and daughter as well. And it didn't end after treatment. Every 6 months we had to get back on the emotional roller coaster while I got tested to see if I was still in remission or not. The threat of cancer constantly looming over your head.
Now imagine your worst fear comes true and your doctor tells you the cancer is growing again.
That was me in late 2019. My PSA numbers had climbed to a point where they classified the origin treatment a “Biochemical Failure”. I was back on the roller coaster but it had a new twist. My treatment options were very limited. Out of 6 treatment options available, only 2 were options for me due to the fact that I had already been treated for cancer.
Option 1 involved more radiation to an area that had already received the recommended maximum lifetime dosage. This carries the potential for side effects, the main one being a secondary cancer from the radiation.
Option 2 is a newer treatment option High Frequency Ultrasound “HiFu”. It does not have the potential side effects of radiation. Unfortunately, it is not covered by my insurance. I have worked with my insurance company but it doesn’t look like they will cover this treatment for quite a while.
In the meantime, the cancer is growing and now I'm getting desperate to receive treatment before it spreads to other parts of my body. I know in my heart that this is the best option for me and my family.
I’m urgently trying to raise $29,000 to cover the medical cost of HiFu. I know many people are struggling financially. If you are able to donate even a small amount, know it will help. If you can’t donate, please consider sharing my story. Your thoughts and prayers are also greatly appreciated.
