Rescue instructor survives critical Heart By-pass Surgery
Brian Horner, has dedicated a life-long career to instructing men, women and children in survival and wilderness medical skills. Through his 36-year training school in Alaska, called Learn to Return, Brian has the unique ability to change the outcome of bad situations by giving good advice and hands-on experience. This advice, and experience has not been without a cost.
As one who has faced many wilderness rescue hardships, he has also endured personal family losses and medical condition setbacks. He lost his youngest daughter at 19, and then survived a “widow maker” heart attack, followed by, his only other daughter overcoming stage-four cancer. In the past two weeks he lost his father, and during this time, survived an almost eight-hour surgery to reconstruct a 6-way arterial cardio bypass maneuver. This was accomplished by harvesting veins and arteries from three parts of his body. His left radial artery was removed, his right leg vein, and an additional artery from his chest. This guy is pretty tough, but he is also pretty beat up mentally and physically, and now, the rescuer, is the patient.
Brian needs help with some possibly significant medical bills, and he will not be able to work for two months. Brian is also asking for donations in order to thank all the health-aids, doctors and nurses who treated him in the hospital, and even during an earthquake. Brian feels that these dedicated professionals need to be recognized beyond a handshake, and a thank you.
Brian is sole proprietor of Learn to Return in Anchorage, AK.
