Hello, my name is Alexandra (Allie) Grady and I am requesting help on behalf of my dad.
I am not sure how to begin. My dad’s hernia surgery on 9/2 resulted in a very rare complication. The doctors say it is only happens once in a career. My dad drove himself to the ER on 9/5 and was transported to Sunrise hospital where his original surgeon could perform emergency surgery. If he had not done this he would be dead.
He had a great thoracic surgeon who saw his esophagus had a perforation the size of a pinky tip. This occurred due to the intense vomiting which ensued after returning home. A tube was placed in his throat and will help it to heal about 95%.
The leakage from the hole has caused fluid in and around his lungs. My dad has undergone two major surgeries to clear out cantaloupe-sized infections in both lungs. He was essentially drowning in his own body. He went septic and was hours away from organ failure. I slept in his room for three weeks to suck thick phlegm out of his mouth and to comfort him while he was on the ventilator, wipe his down with a towel, read to him, hold his hand, play music, etc.
I am proud to have taken on the responsibility of paying his bills, contacting his banks and attorneys, hiring a dog sitter, and generally doing everything I can to maintain his life. However, I have seen people “code” and require resuscitation. Some have died and some have lived. I have tried to be in peoples rooms as they passed so that they didn’t die alone.
As he begins his journey to recovery and physical therapy I would like him to return to a clean house, provide new food for his three dogs, have the fish tank cleaned and possibly buy him a recliner from Big Lots to make him more comfortable at home. I am requesting help to ensure my dad can have the best possible care once he gets home including therapy for us both.
I truly would be so grateful for any kind of monetary support you feel comfortable with. I was unable to work during this time because of the level of responsibility I have needed to have over him and his medical care.
With many thanks,
Allie
