Brian Akins Heart of Gold Medical Expense Fund

Friends and Family,
On Tuesday, April 12th, our dear friend, Brian Akins, suffered a stroke. When he arrived at the emergency room, we learned that although the damage to his brain was likely irreversible, it was not extensive. Much of his speech and cognitive functioning could return with time and intense therapy. We are already seeing significant improvements even just ten days later!
When doctors were able to stabilize Brian’s symptoms, they admitted him and began investigating the cause of the stroke. In doing so, they discovered that the clot had traveled from his heart. They then found that Brian was experiencing severe heart failure and immediately shifted his treatment plan to address the heart.
His kids are rallying around him to provide the now necessary 24/7 care. They are currently managing three significant challenges (Stroke, Diabetes, and a weakened heart), and there is a huge learning curve for everyone. We are hopeful for recovery! But the road ahead is daunting.
As the initial shock of the event has settled, the overwhelming reality of this long road to recovery is presenting itself. The Akins family will need the support of Brian’s network to make this journey possible. The process of applying for disability is in motion, but the family has been told to prepare for six months to be approved.
We anticipate that Brian’s monthly expense budget will be around $4,000. That does not include the impending medical bills that will arrive any day. Brian has been a generous, compassionate, and loyal friend to many of us. Would you consider giving to help the family offset these impending expenses?
Our goal is to raise $25,000 by the end of May to alleviate the stress of bridging the financial gap between now and approval for long-term disability. Any gift of any amount given in any way is appreciated! All contributions will go towards Brian’s care.
Other ways to support the Akins Family:
Pray – Brian is a man of faith, and knowing that his people are praying for him will be a HUGE boost to his hope and determination.
Bring a meal – Sign up to bring Brian dinner.
(please limit sodium to 500mg/serving and carbs to 60g/serving)
Visit Brian – Come over and watch a game or share a meal. His people are what he lives for. Visitors are a significant boost to his morale! This is a great way to help out his kids as well.
Wisdom – Brian raised his kids to be independent and capable, but this is a HEAVY lift. There is so much to navigate! If you feel like you have an idea or some experience to impart to the family, reach out!
Thank you so much! Brian’s community has already come through in so many ways! It’s going to take a village to get through this. Thank you for being a part of his village!
