Brett’s journey home
Donation protected
Brett Swanlund(37) was in a tragic mountain biking accident on June 9th. He suffered severe trauma to his neck, vertebral column and spinal cord.He underwent 2 neck surgeries in which he had bones fused and rods connected in order to stabilize his skull, neck, and spinal column. Brett was in the trauma intensive care unit of R.I. Hospital on life support for almost 2 weeks. He endured a ventilator, tracheostomy, and feeding tube to his stomach and was heavily sedated. Brett’s injury has left him with no sensation or movement from the waist down.
Brett’s cognitive abilities are sharp and his strong-will and determination are evident. He has limited movement of his upper body, arms, and hands for which he is thankful. He is doing rigorous PT and OT training to get stronger and learn daily living skills to be independent. Brett is anxious about the effect of his accident on his family and is being hopeful that he can walk again in the days to come. He will need a lot of encouragement on this long journey ahead. He will need to heal his body and mind with your help!
The prognosis is uncertain at this time-will the paralysis be temporary or lifelong? Time will tell, but the family has immediate needs in terms of preparing for Brett’s homecoming. He will require a wheelchair, ramps, adaptive equipment, remodeled bathroom, personal home care, and possibly a stairlift and vehicle , as well as funding for non-covered medical bills. The family is reaching out to all those who love and care for the Swanlund family to help them afford all these necessities so that Brett can come home in safety and comfort. Your financial support is immensely appreciated to help Brett, Jenn, Logan(9) and Kayla(5) get through this tragedy. Thank you for whatever donation you could make. Much love and gratitude are in our hearts for all your love and support during this sorrowful time.
