Help Brett Slater & His Daughters After Devastating Accident
Donation protected
Dear friends, family, and compassionate community,
My name is Alyssa Mills and I, along with my family, am reaching out to graciously ask for your help during this difficult time. My brother, Brett Slater, was seriously injured in an accident at work this week.
Brett is a dedicated single father to two wonderful pre-teen girls, Kashlynn (11) and Ellie (10). Brett has come so far in the past few years, battling some very difficult times while working hard to be the best father he can be for his girls. As an independent contractor, Brett works tirelessly to provide for his family, often taking on tough jobs to ensure his daughters have everything they need. Unfortunately, without the safety nets of health insurance or workers' compensation, his job comes with significant risks.
This week, Brett's worst nightmare came true. While working on a deck, he suffered a catastrophic fall, plummeting 12' onto the concrete below. The impact left him with several injuries:
- fractured skull with two small brain bleeds (subarachnoid and subdural)
- laceration of the spleen (not bleeding)
- fractured scapula and rib
- compression fractures of his spine (C7, T1-3)
Brett was rushed to the ICU where he remains in stable condition. The CT scan this morning showed no brain swelling, which is a small but hopeful sign. However, the road to recovery will be long and arduous. Brett will need to wear a C-collar for at least 6 weeks while his vertebrae heal, will be unable to drive for a couple of weeks due to the brain injuries, and will be restricted from twisting or lifting anything over 10 pounds during this time. He'll need extensive follow-up over the next few months and need physical and occupation therapy, as well as appointments with the neurologist.
This accident has turned Brett's world upside down. As an independent contractor, he has no health insurance to cover his mounting medical bills and no workers' compensation to support him during recovery. The financial burden is overwhelming, and the emotional toll on his family is immense. Kashlynn and Ellie are scared for their dad and uncertain about their future.
We're reaching out to the community to rally around Brett and his daughters during this incredibly challenging time. Your generous contributions will help cover:
- medical expenses
- rehabilitation and therapy costs
- daily living expenses for Brett and his girls, as he'll be unable to work for quite some time and will have no income
- school supplies for the girls as they start back to school in a couple of weeks
- support for Kashlynn and Ellie as they navigate this upheaval and difficult time
Every donation, no matter how small, will make a significant difference in their lives. Brett has never been a person to ask for help, even when times were tough. Brett has always been there for his family and friends, and now it's our turn to be there for him
Thank you for taking the time to read Brett’s story. Even if you're unable to donate at this time, please keep Brett and his girls in your thoughts and prayers. Your kindness and support mean the world to him and his daughters. Together, we can help Brett get back on his feet and ensure Kashlynn and Ellie have the stability they need during this tough time. Please share this campaign with your network to spread the word. If you'd like to help in another way, please contact me directly.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Alyssa Mills & Brett's family
