Brent's Path to Healing: Your Support Needed
Donation protected
Hello all. As many of you know, and for those of you that don’t, my oldest child Brent (Norah) has experienced mental health struggles for the past several years. Last December (2023) they were diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. Scizoaffective is a type of schizophrenia combined with a mood disorder (depression, anxiety, BPD.) Most of the past year they have been housed in a mental health hospital. Recently, they were eligible to move into a dormitory for other adults with similar circumstances.
In the early morning hours of September 21st, they attempted to commit suicide. During the effort they sustained massive lacerations to the back of the head and obliterated multiple vertebrae. EMS were quick to respond, taking them to University of Maryland Shock Trauma. During diagnostics and imaging it was revealed that paralysis had occurred, and massive pressure on the spinal cord needed to be addressed. Multiple lengthy surgeries took place over the weekend to remove the impeding bone fragments and stabilize the cervical spine. They are currently housed on the neuro critical care unit, where they have remained on a ventilator and have shown minimal signs of motor function. The team continues to monitor for changes and combat issues that arise from extensive spinal trauma.
We as a family do not know what the future holds; spending time at the bedside and trying to remain optimistic. There is no timeline or expectations, the only focus is on healing. We are leaning on friends and family for support, asking everyone to simply keep us in their hearts. If you are moved to do so, please put positivity into the universe and have faith.
Thank you,
XoXo
