Lung Transplant Needed

Suffocating From Within:

Hi. I’m Lakeedra Cannon. I’m 34 years old with a chronic lung condition. I am a former teacher and coach at Wallace Elementary Middle School in Wallace SC.

In January of 2022 my world was turned upside down. I was told by my pulmonologist that I needed to quit my job due to my lung interstitial lung disease. This disease attacks the lungs and causes permanent scarring and damage. As a result, I was placed on oxygen 24/7.

I couldn’t imagine a life where I didn’t teach or coach. I cried for months because I truly love teaching and coaching. 

HISTORY OF LUNG CONDITION:

In 2008 I was discovered to have several pulmonary embolisms (blood clots in the lungs). The doctors were unsure if what caused them and attributed it to birth control. After stopping birth control, I continued to have breathing problems that was diagnosed as pneumonia several times. Unfortunately, it was not pneumonia, but end up being Interstitial Lung Disease. When you have interstitial lung disease, parts of your lungs that help oxygen get into your blood and out to your tissues are damaged. Scarring in your lungs makes it hard to breathe, and you might have a chronic cough. Lack of oxygen can make you feel tired all the time.

When damage continues to get worse, you can have life-threatening complications, like lung infections and respiratory failure (not enough oxygen or too much carbon dioxide in your body). I personally  have had several lung infections and went through respiratory failure in May 2022. Due to the severity of my lung condition, a transplant is the only viable way to improve my current health and give me a chance to live longer.

HOW WILL THE MONEY BE USED:

No donation is too small. The funds will be used for relocating to Durham to be READY for the call. They will also be use for travel expenses, medicines, housing, basic necessities, and emergencies that may arise.
