Almost two years ago Emelie went to a walk-in health clinic for a regular check up that ended up changing her life forever. When asked about her family history Emelie told the doctor her mom had passed in her early 40s from breast cancer. The doctor insisted that Emelie go get tested for the BRCA gene mutation ASAP! She followed the doctors orders and did the blood test that following week. The results ended up coming back positive for BRCA2.
What is BRCA2?? This means Emelie is at a very high risk of developing breast cancer along with other cancers. If diagnosed with breast cancer along with testing positve for the BRCA2 gene the cancer would be more aggressive, harder to treat, and could happen at a younger age.
After hearing this news Emelie knew she had a huge decision to make. After thinking about all of her options, talking with family and friends and talking with her doctors, Emelie chose to get a full mastectomy. This will cut her chances of getting breast cancer from 84 % to less than 1%.
Unfortunately, surgery is going to require Emelie to take at least a month and a half off work to be fully healed before she goes back to gardening full time {hopefully by the end of April}. In order for her to recover properly she will be almost completely immobile for two weeks to a month. She’s will need help while being unable to work to pay her living and medical expenses.
