Hello - my sister, Catherine Rumschlag, age 57, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. On January 7, 2022, she underwent surgery for a mastectomy and will be out of work for at least a month. She is self employed as a therapist and is enrolled in a high deductible insurance plan, so her medical costs are going to be extensive over the next several months as she embarks on the journey of reconstruction and recovery. For starters, her initial deductible on her insurance plan is $8000. And the reconstructive surgery will be a process over the next year. Due to the nature of her job, she only earns an income when she is able to work. That is going to be challenging over the next several months as she will need to be off work completely for at least a month, and then will need to take a great deal of time off for the follow up medical appointments and reconstructive surgery.

The good news is the first step was a success, the lymph nodes were not impacted, and her road to full recovery is promising. However, the next several months will be challenging for her physically, emotionally and financially. She is not able to work and does not have a disability plan so her income will be tremendously limited. My goal is to help ease this burden for her so that she can focus on her recovery without tremendous financial stress on top of the physical and emotional toll of becoming a breast cancer survivor.
