It's definitely possible to live a normal and healthy life with type 1 diabetes. However, to make that happen requires you to almost constantly think about your diabetes. Take your eye off the ball even for a few hours and your blood sugar will be through the roof (or floor), which eventually leads to severe health complications. Even with access to the newest tech, type 1 is a daily grind that gets in the way of life. If I could take it from my 15 year old and do it for her I would, in a heartbeat.
In fact, it would be amazing to give all kids with type 1 their childhood back. Science has identified a few pathways to a potential cure, or at least better ways to manage. As always though, more research is needed.
So, I'm running a marathon up a big flipping hill to raise money for BreakthroughT1D, a type 1 diabetes charity working to improve lives until they find the cure.
