One of the most naturally occurring body processes are preventing young women from being in education on a monthly basis. JB Caring Hearts has started an initiative to empower multiple sectors of the underserved female population of Uganda. Young girls are being dissuaded from continuing their education due to a pervasive cultural stigma surrounding menstruation. Girls are made to feel embarrassed, unnatural, and unclean during their period because they are unable to afford sanitary products. On the opposite side of the spectrum, adult women struggle to find the capital needed to be self-reliant. Without a consistent income women are unable to start businesses of their own, support their families, and pursue their career goals.
The aim of this program is to create a community of women supporting women. This program will train adult women from the slums of Uganda to make reusable femine hygiene pads for young girls.
When the adult women come into the JB Caring Hearts center to sew the pads they will also be learning the skills of small business finance like budgeting and micro-saving which will empower them to have enough funds to start businesses they were previously unable to start.
JB Caring Hearts will deliver the reusable sanitary pads to young girls at their schools for free and once there will lead sessions on sex education, confidence, and healthy relationships.
It takes $4 to make a kit of 2 reusable pads and 6 interchangeable inserts which will last a girl 2 years. 1$ of the 4$ will contribute to the weekly salary of 5-10 adult women from the slums. $1500 will pay for 500 kits and the training and salary for 10 adult women for a month.
