Aloha! My name is Lindsey Tilton, and I’m preparing to take on a challenge that will push my physical and mental limits while shining a spotlight on a cause close to my heart: mental health and addiction recovery. I will be attempting the Great Alabama 650 a 650-mile river race across the state of Alabama, renowned as the toughest in the USA—on a stand-up paddleboard. This race has only seen two finishes on a stand up paddleboard, both of which were men. This isn’t just about breaking records. It’s about breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and addiction, and supporting those in recovery. That’s why I’ve partnered with SHE RECOVERS 501(c)3, a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting, supporting, and empowering women in or seeking recovery from substance use, mental health issues, and other life challenges.
Why This Matters
- Mental health challenges are widespread, with 1 in 5 adults experiencing mental illness each year -likely understated due to stigma (NAMI)
- Only 43% of adults with mental illness received treatment in 2020 (SAMHSA)
- Over 20 million Americans struggle with substance use disorder, but only 11% receive the treatment they need (SAMHSA)
- Despite these numbers, stigma and lack of access to resources prevent many from seeking help.
- Suicide is the second leading cause of death in individuals age 10-34 (NIMH)
- Every 40 seconds, someone dies by suicide, making it a leading cause of death globally.
SHE RECOVERS is changing this narrative by providing women with the resources, community, and support they need to recover and thrive. But they need our help to reach even more women in need!
How You Can Help: I’m raising funds to support She Recovers and their life-saving programs. Your contribution will help women access the resources, community, and support they need on their journey to recovery.
Your donation will help:
- Expand outreach and support programs to reach more women in need.
- Provide scholarships for women to attend She Recovers recovery retreats and events.
- Fund online and in-person resources that empower women to take charge of their recovery.
As I attempt to paddle 650 miles self navigation through challenging conditions facing alligators, poisonous snakes, and even bears, I’ll be thinking of the women who face their own challenges every day. I’ll be sharing my journey on social media (@earthgrownlindsey), and I invite you to follow along, share my story, and contribute to this vital cause.
Together, we can make a difference. Together we can end the stigma!
